I started this project thinking it would be pretty easy but it was not.. well it did add significantly to my learning curve. I have learnt few things about SAMBA, DLNA server, mapping network drives.
The tools/softwares I used for the implementation are..
1. Unused old laptop (Vostr-1400, Intel Dual Core 1.4GHz, 4GB Ram, 160GB HDD)
2. O.S Ubuntu 10.
3. Samba
4. PLEX Media server
5. GParted
6. webmin
The most trying part was to make the shared drives created by GParted available to the other computers on network.
gparted is used to create drives which I also used for extracting information about the portable HDD (UID).
For installing samba and playing around with drives the key file is smb.conf which is available after installing samba on Linux, it is available at /etc/samba/smb.conf
A point to be noted is backing up the original smb.conf.
It is the WorkGroup that gets the samba associated with the other computers running windows 7 with it.
Also I used the webmin which is a more appealing to eye GUI for dealing with the paritions or shared drives.
I will try to add more detail to this going forward, for now I am able to access all the media files through PLEX Media server (on my TV/Phone/Windows media player on windows 7 laptop), and able to upload new content through the same.
AndSMB is another app available on google Play Store which lets my Android phone connect to the samba server and download the media files (songs) to the phone.
Thanks,
Sridhar
